AIM SMARTwith-us Co-working competition - FINALIST

We recently participated in a Co-working space design competition and we are happy to announce that we were selected as a finalist for both Shanghai and Beijing submittals. Our proposal is to create a new co-working brand that can be applied to multiple locations, commenting on the new creative class and the need to be mobile. Our design promotes cross discipline collaborations and co-sharing through creating movable nodes and connector desks.

ARCHIPELAGOS Interview:
1. Why did you participate in this competition?  First, being familiar with similar co-working spaces that are very popular in our city (New York) we were very curious how similar concepts will evolve, adapt and change within Chinese context, and how will they differentiate based on specific contexts of each city.
Second, we as a studio have experimented over the years with various configurations of our own office settings in a search for the most flexible and suitable solutions for our collaborative creative process. We tried to distill the most successful scenarios and experiences and implement them in our proposed designs.

2. What’s your opinion on the meaning or value of “Co-working Space”?  They are undeniably hubs for cross-disciplinary innovating thinking. Additionally they create platform for individuals or small start-ups who might not be able to afford office spaces or studios on their own to work in a highly stimulating and creative environment. Our hope for the sequence of our proposed movable "nodes" is to encourage various disciplines to identify each program category/brand easily and to"plug-in" and mix to become a part of its incredible creative matrix.

3. Where did your design inspiration comes from?  Our inspiration is always derived from the specific context of the project, it's brief and the target client/user.

4. Did you have any unforgettable experience of feelings in this competition process?   One unforgettable experience was that we couldn't read the Shenzhen plans. We had worked on all three locations as part of our “systematic solution” approach, but last minute we decided through much discussion to omit this location.
